I came to Tango because of a desire to do something different, something out of the box, something that my friends, family, and professional colleagues would least expect me to do, something fun other than pursuing my doctorate degree. I was invited to consider Argentine Tango. In the short time that I have been learning the rudiments of the dance, I have developed an appreciation of the artistry of the dance, and the enthusiasm it generates among individuals committed to the sharing of the dance. As I grow in confidence with my knowledge, skill, and experience of the dance, I have come to understand two elements about me as a tango dancer. First, as a follower who is a tango dancer, I love both styles of embrace. I love close embrace because of the intimate communication and personal connection that can happen between two people who enjoy tango dancing. I love open embrace because of the excitement of how the dance is being interpreted between two tango dancers. Secondly, as a woman who is a tango dancer, I enjoy most, my leads who incorporates both styles of embrace within his/her dance, thereby allowing me to simultaneously enjoy excitement of the interpretation that makes the dance stimulating and interesting and the close intimacy that heightens the joy of the dance.
